Gilda Cauley

September 28, 1929 — December 12, 2019

Gilda Cauley, 90, Lenexa, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019. Gilda was born Sept. 28, 1929 in Fall River, MA to James and Ora (Desrosiers) Mitchell.

Gilda (Gil)  grew up in Fall River, Mass and graduated from BNC Durfee High School. She later moved to Kansas City where she met her husband, Tom. In the early 1970's she worked for Charles F. Curry and then was an administrative assistant for Kansas City Mayor Charles Wheeler. She then worked at the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney's Office as a child support supervisor for 15 years until she retired in 1999.

Gil raised her two sons, Jack and Kevin, as a single parent since 1972, when she lost her husband. Gil was known to all of the children in the neighborhood as "Momma Cauley" and kept that nickname into her later years. She did not know a stranger and often invited those without families to her home for holiday meals.

Gil found a way to successfully raise two boys as a single parent at a time in history when it was not common place to do so. Both of her sons entered the law enforcement profession and became career police officers.

Gil had an infectious smile and was an eternal optimist.  Each and every day she demonstrated to others the power of positive thinking and always approaching life in that manner.

Gil was known for her famous "Momma Cauley" homemade fudge.  Her fudge was enjoyed by countless friends, family and first responders.

Gil was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Cauley and two sisters, Florence Darcy and Gerry Kemp. Survivors include her two sons, Jack (Deanna) Cauley, Greenwood Village, CO and Kevin (Diana) Cauley, Lenexa, KS.

Visitation will be 10-12:00 Friday, Dec. 20 at the Amos Family Funeral Home. Graveside service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, at the Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, MO.
