Harold Berntsen passed away on June 21, 2021 in Olathe, Kansas.
He was born in a small rural area of Loyal, Oklahoma on April 3, 1925. He attained a High School diploma and graduated from Loyal High School.
He enlisted in the Army at the age of 17, served in heavy action at the front, and earned the level of Sergeant and a purple heart.
Harold was married to June Isbill in April of 1947 and they were happily married for over 70 years.
He was hard working, ambitious and had a strong belief in the importance of education. Harold always had a do-it-yourself project going on, and helped to build their home in Kansas City, Kansas; an economical earth contact home on the outskirts of the city. He raised goats on this “farm” and even had a milk goat for milk and cheese. He was never idle. He was always planting something or improving something around the house.
Harold was a self-made man. He was early in life passed over for promotions because he had not gone to college, so he studied hard and earned a top score on the Civil Service exam, out scoring many who had attended college and secured a position with the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He retired from their service after more than 30 years. He was a devoted Catholic, making sure to raise his daughters in this tradition, and sending them to Catholic schools for most of their years. He loved his wife, June, and was always doing something on her “honey do” list to improve their lives together. He is no doubt doing some DIY project in Heaven as we speak.
Harold is survived by two daughters, Joyce and Donna; grandchildren Travis and Ashley; and great-grandchildren Alexander, Rebecca, Kinsley and Quinn.
We thank the professionals at Benton House of Olathe for their kind assisted care through these past two years. We further thank the nurses, doctors and caregivers at the Olathe Medical Center.
Services will be held at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Kansas City, Kansas on Thursday, June 24th at 10 am. Harold will rest in peace at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery alongside his dear wife, June.
Contributions in his name can be sent to any of your favorite charities, or simply plant a living thing with him in mind.
