Harvey John Cooke

June 19, 1931 — January 6, 2016

Harvey John Cooke, 84, passed away January 6, 2016. Harvey was born June 19, 1931 in Liberty Hill, NC to James and Esther Cooke. He was one of nine children. Five sisters and three brothers. He graduated from Candor High School in 1950. In October 1951, he entered the US Air Force. He served in Korea in 1951-52. Upon returning to the states, he was sent to Carswell AF Base, Ft. Worth, TX where he completed his AF tour. He attended one year of college at Texas Wesleyan College, Ft. Worth, TX. He transferred to Emporia State University where he obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Business. He was then hired to teach at Shawnee Mission North High School. In 1968, he was hired by the Metropolitan Community Colleges where he taught business and accounting until retirement in 1995. The last nine years at Penn Valley he was Chair of the Business Division. He met Phyllis Denham in the fall of 1960 through a friend who attended the Community Christian Church. They were married April 22, 1961. He was a life member of Phi Theta Kappa. He was a member of the Shawnee Masonic Lodge, Scottish rite, and Abdallah Shrine. He was a member of Overland Park Christian Church for 53 years where he served in many positions. Harvey is survived by his wife, Phyllis of 54 years, son, Steve (Julia) Cooke, daughter, Pam Engelken, four grandchildren; Stephanie and Mallory Cooke, Michael and Jaimie Engelken, and sister, Marge Sellers.

Services

A Visitation is set for 3:00 - 4:00 PM, Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Overland Park Christian Church 7600 W. 75th Street Overland Park, Kansas 66204 with a Funeral service immediately following at 4:00 PM, Saturday. Burial will take place at 1:00 PM, Monday at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
