Harvey Lee Woods

Harvey Lee Woods, 70, of Shawnee, KS passed away at home on June 11, 2018. He was born in Sedalia, MO on February 25, 1948 to William and Irene Woods. His parents moved the family to Independence, MO in his youth, wherein Harvey had the fortune of being a neighborhood paperboy to former President Harry S. Truman. Harvey would later graduate from Truman High School in 1966. He enrolled in college at Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State University) but left soon after to enlist in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, serving four years active duty and two years reserve. He eventually met and then married Gwen Thelen (Woods) on July 20, 1985. They began their life together in Shawnee, KS. Harvey was a diligent worker who took pride in supporting his family through his employment at Cargill, Continental Grain, and Superior Volvo. Harvey was also a sport enthusiast who enjoyed cheering on his children in their athletic pursuits, as well as watching and yelling for and at Kansas City sports teams. He cherished time with family, spending time outdoors, mastering grilling techniques, and sharing his thoughts on current sociopolitical topics. Known as a tough young man with a playful sense of humor in his early years, he matured into a kind and compassionate grandfather who was lovingly nicknamed "Ha-Ha" by his granddaughter, Izabella. He is survived by his wife (Gwen), son (Brett) and daughter-in-law (Ellen), step-daughter (Kristin) and son-in-law (Brent), mother (Irene), two brothers (Mike & Kenny), two grandchildren (Izabella & Isaiah), and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father.

Visitation at Amos Family Funeral Home (Shawnee, KS) on Friday, June 15, 2018 from 6:00-7:00pm with a celebration of life ceremony to begin at 7:00pm.
