Ladies and gentlemen, we bid a fond farewell to Herbert "Tex" Schnieders Jr., who has moseyed off into the great beyond at the age of 84. Born on December 15, 1939, in Dallas, TX, Tex finally decided it was time to hang up his spurs on August 11, 2024, in Shawnee, KS.
Tex rode through life with the gusto of a man on a mission. After graduating from Ward High School in 1958, he took to the high seas for four years in the Navy, no doubt leaving a trail of sea stories and salty jokes in his wake. He then dutifully served the public through his work with the United States Postal Service, where he didn't just deliver mail but also good cheer and perhaps a few dad jokes that could make even the grumpiest postmaster smile. As a past president of the National Association for Postal Supervisors, Tex ensured everything ran as smoothly as his beloved model trains.
His interests ran wide, from cheering on the Kansas City Royals—often with the fervor of someone who believed his cheers directly influenced the outcome of the game—to tinkering with model trains and attending every grandkid activity he could make it to. He was a very active member in St. Joseph Church. His goal after retirement was to attend daily mass. He did not require a lot of sleep so attending 6:25 mass every morning was a highlight in his day. His dedication to family was unparalleled. His wife of 59 years, Doris Schnieders, and his three daughters Robin Dunn (Ed) of Madison, AL, Jennifer Bevitt (Jeff) of Shawnee, KS, and Lori Wood (John) of Lenexa, KS, knew him as their rock, their joker, and their biggest fan. His eight grandchildren—Adam (Bridgette), Colleen (Aaron), Allison, Ryan (Sophie), Grace, Jack, Anna, and Michael—and three great-grandchildren were the twinkle in his eye and the reason for many of his proudest moments. He had many nieces and nephews that he loved as his own and enjoyed many moments of love and laughter.
Tex was preceded in death by an impressive welcoming committee: his parents Herb and Vivian Schnieders, his in-laws Francis and Dorothy Jennings, his two children Caroline and Steven Schnieders, and many others who likely had a party ready for his arrival.
Surviving to carry on his legacy of love and laughter are not only Doris and his daughters but also his brothers Jack Schnieders (Sharon), Bill Schnieders (Mary Ann), Mike Schnieders (Cathy), and Lee Schnieders. These siblings will surely share memories of Tex’s antics and his penchant for telling jokes that bordered on inappropriate but always elicited hearty laughs.
Services to celebrate Tex's life will begin with a visitation at Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee, KS, from 5-8 PM on Thursday, August 15. A rosary will be prayed at 5:00 pm. The festivities will continue with a Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM on Friday, August 16, followed by a graveside service at Resurrection Cemetery.
Tex lived for his family. His wife and daughters were his girls, and his grandchildren were the sunshine on even his cloudiest days. He had a knack for making people laugh with off-color jokes and was always the first to give a warm hug and kiss hello. Tex, you’ve stamped your final letter, and while the world may be a little less witty without you, your legacy of love and laughter will live on.
