Hilda Erickson, 94, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Tuesday evening, October 5, 2010 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
Hilda was born January 28, 1916, in Erlanger, Kentucky. During World War II she enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps, where she received training to be a Registered Nurse.
After the war ended, Hilda moved to Kansas where she married Carl A. Erickson, Jr. on November 29, 1947 in Merriam, Kansas. Carl preceded her in death on July 1, 2008. She worked as a private nurse for several years before her children, Bill and Carol, were born. She also worked at the Florence Crittenton Home in Kansas City, Missouri.
After her children were old enough to go to school, she helped open the Shawnee Mission Medical Center and worked as the Head Nurse in the Newborn nursery for almost 30 years. She was an active Charter member of Merriam Bible Church.
Hilda is survived by a daughter, Carol Schmidt, and her husband Michael, Mesa, Arizona; a son Bill Erickson, Overland Park, Kansas; a sister, Wanda Beiser, Florence, Kentucky; two brothers, Fred Blackburn and wife Emogene, Cincinnati Ohio; Don Blackburn and wife Fran, Petersburg, Kentucky. Three grandchildren, Brooke Erickson, Allyson Schmidt and Zachary Schmidt also survive her.
Visitation and Funeral Service
Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 2010, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri.
