Hubert M. Dye Jr. (Father Gregory Dye) fell asleep in the Lord on May 13th surrounded by family. He was 84 years old. He was born on March 22, 1932 to Hubert Dye and Marion (Dillenbeck) Dye in Wichita, Kansas. He married Barbara (Adams) Dye in 1967 and they had two children Elizabeth Dye (Schulte) and Alexander Dye.
He graduated from the University of Kansas where he served as President of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. Upon graduation he earned a Rotary Scholarship to study in Edinburgh, Scotland and subsequently served in the United States Air Force. He earned a Masters in Divinity from Harvard University and graduated from General Theological Seminary in New York in 1968. He served as a priest in the Episcopal Church for 10 years and then became a priest in the Orthodox Church in America where he served a variety of parishes for more than 20 years.
Hubert loved bluegrass and folk music and played the banjo. He had a love of history, limericks of all ratings, and could recite The Cremation of Sam McGee or The Shooting of Dan McGrew without missing a beat. He loved Gilbert and Sullivan and enjoyed learning and practicing French. One of his favorite spots on earth was his family's cabin in Green Mountain Falls, Colorado.
Hubert is survived by his wife Barbara of 49 years, daughter Elizabeth (Scott) Schulte, son Alexander (Jenner) Dye, granddaughters Hazel Dye and Hattie Dye, and his brother William (Margaret) Dye. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Jessica (Larry) Evers. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
A funeral service will be held at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Overland Park, Kansas on Friday, 5/20 at 7pm with visitation beginning at 5pm. There will be Divine Liturgy on Saturday, 5/21 at 9:30am followed by a reception. Burial will be in Wichita, Kansas on Sunday, 5/22 at Maple Grove Cemetery at 1:00pm.
