James Lee Mizell

April 27, 1958 — April 20, 2025

Cleveland, Missouri

James Lee Mizell, a devoted brother, uncle, skilled musician, and longtime public servant, passed away on April 20, 2025, in Cleveland, Missouri, just one week shy of his 67th birthday.

Born on April 27, 1958, in Kansas City, Missouri, James was the beloved son of Herb Mizell and Constance Mizell (later Neugebauer). He dedicated 43 years of his life to the United States Postal Service, where his steadfast work ethic and warm demeanor touched the lives of many.

Outside of work, James was a talented and passionate musician. Whether strumming a guitar, playing the drums, or sitting at a keyboard, he found solace and joy in both playing and listening to music. His home was filled with melodies and love, especially for his nieces, Montie and Samantha, whom he proudly helped raise following the passing of their mother, his sister Cynthia Dever.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Herb Mizell and Constance Neugebauer; his stepfather, Bob Neugebauer; and his sister, Cynthia. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his nieces, Montie Butler (Michael) and Samantha Simmons (Duane); nephew, Eric Neugebauer (Amanda); stepsisters, Eve Neugebauer and Dawn Unger (Bob); stepbrothers, James Neugebauer (Kelly) and Brett Neugebauer; and cousin, Michael Mizell (Kelly), as well as many other great-nieces and great-nephews.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate James’s life at a visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 2025, at the Amos Family Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m., with burial immediately afterward at St. Joseph Cemetery in Shawnee, Kansas.

James Lee Mizell will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous heart, and unwavering love for his family. His music and memory will echo in the hearts of all who knew him.
