James Robert Pemberton

James Pemberton, 94, of Shawnee, passed away Saturday, November 27, 2021 at his apartment at Shawnee Hills. Jim was born in Kansas City, Kansas on November 26, 1927 to the late David William and Anna Marie Pemberton. He attended St. Peter’s Catholic Grade School in Kansas City, Kansas until the family moved to Shawnee in 1938. In Shawnee, he attended and graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1945 with a graduation class of 11. After high school, Jim enlisted in the Army where he entered a special training program for cryptography and was then sent to Guam to serve at a radio/teletype station for a year. He was discharged in 1947. After completing his military service, Jim went to work for Proctor and Gamble in Kansas City for the next 28 years, moving up the ranks at a young age to a management role. In 1975 he was transferred to the Sacramento, California plant where he worked for 12 more years. While working at P&G, he met the love of his life, Shirley. They were married on September 3, 1949 and spent 64 years together.

Jim was a man with many interests; he was an animal lover, athlete, craftsman, fisherman, and traveler. But most of all he was a loyal friend, a devoted family man, and an amazing role model for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His quick wit, positive attitude, and strength of character have made all of us who we are today. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his daughter Linda (Darell) Ptacek and son Mark (Cathy) Pemberton; three grandsons, Russell (Erin) Ptacek, Travis (Stephanie) Ptacek, Cody (Kerri) Ptacek; and seven great-grandchildren: Ethan, Blair, Nova, Marie, Camden, Derek, and Quincy.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee on Sunday, December 5. Visitation will begin at 12:00 and the service will follow at 12:30. The family requests that masks be worn by all attending out of respect for those who are unable to be vaccinated against Covid because of age or medical conditions.
