James L. Wymer

James L. Wymer, 74, a longtime resident of Merriam, KS passed away in his home Tuesday May 2, 2018. James was born January 15, 1944 to the late Al and Martha Wymer in Pleasanton, Kansas.  Jim served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1966.  He served as a Nuclear, Biological and Chemical warfare specialist and transported explosives to units that where pinned down during the Vietnam War.  On October 8, 1976, Jim married the love of his life Carol Steward-Malott.    Jim owned JL Wymer Construction before retiring in 2014.  Jim was a member of Grace Christian Fellowship Church, and was a founder and board member of the Downtown Merriam Partnership. He served two terms as a Councilman for the city of Merriam in 2001 to 2005 and again served from 2013 until January 2017.  While serving on the city council, Jim was instrumental in having restroom facilities placed at Merriam City Market. He also worked towards getting Flags for Freedom along the streets of Merriam, as well as being a member of the Drainage Board. Jim was also one of the developers for the Christmas banquet dinner, feeding over four hundred people during the holidays.  He was also a key lobbyist to stop the imminent domain of his and several other properties on Merriam Lane while serving on the council.  Jim was a man of integrity and always believed in leading with the truth.  Jim was well known and seemed to know everyone and had a friend everywhere he traveled.  He was a very kind and generous man and always looked forward to Christmas.  Jim was always able to find true joy in giving to others.  He will be remembered for his hard work ethic, kindness to others and great sense of humor.  Jim is preceded in death by his brothers, John, Gene, Harold and Dale.  He is also preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn.  Jim is survived by loving wife of 41 years, Carol; a daughter, Jessieca Pennington and husband Larry; two sons Jason Wymer and Jeff Wymer; nine grandchildren Taylor, Garrett, Zibah, Lyric, Mias, Jason Jr., Troy, Derek and Ashley.

Memorial Service will be on June 23rd at 10:00 am at Grace Christian Fellowship Church, 7230 Quivira Road, Shawnee, KS 66216.
