Janice “Jan” Patrick, age 83, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 7th, 2023. She joined her parents, husband, siblings, and oldest child.
Jan was born and raised in Southern MO with her 4 siblings Arnold (Alma) Baumgartner (Deceased), Ron Simmons (Deceased), Don Simmons (Alene), and Phyllis Pierce (Deceased). She took care of her father and siblings at the age of 10, after her mother passed, until he remarried. Her fondest child hood memory was visiting grandparents and riding cousins’ horses. After graduating Owensville #2 High School she moved to Shawnee, KS with Lewis, Dorothy, and Hank Baumgartner. Dorothy took Jan under her wing and helped her get her first job. Soon after, she got a job with Farmers Insurance in Overland Park and worked her way up to be an Office Claims Supervisor.
She went on her first date with Donald Richard Patrick and hated him. With a change of heart, they went out a few times and ended up getting married in the early 60s. Richard joined the Air Force and they traveled and came back and lived in Olathe KS. In 1977 they moved to Parker, KS. They took in her nephews Derrick Gaines (Deceased) and Patrick Gaines (Amanda) and raised as their own. They opened an amazing BBQ restaurant “Pat’s Place.” After working all day at Farmers, Jan would come home and make homemade desserts for the restaurant. They then took in one of their employees Annjanette Adlong (Kenneth Jr) and raised her. Richard got cancer and passed in February of 1991.
Jan moved to Shawnee, KS in March of '92. Her step mother Bernice lived with her on and off for a few years. She retired and then went back to Farmers, traveling to help with major disasters. She then retired again.
After her brother Arnold passed, her sister in law Alma moved in with her in 2001. She enjoyed collecting antique glass (butter dishes were favorite), reading, traveling, bowling leagues, dinner theaters, cooking, sewing, staring out the window and enjoying the birds and flowers. As a faithful member she attended church 3 times a week at Lenexa Church of Christ. Jan hosted lots of events at her home to cook meals for everyone.
Her true passion in life was taking care of people. She had a service heart and loved people by taking care of them, taking them in her home, being an insurance adjuster, cooking for everyone because everyone loved to eat her cooking.
She is survived by 2 children, 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 1 brother, and 2 sister in laws.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 12th, 2023 from 10-11am, with a funeral service beginning at 11am. Both will be held at the Amos Family Funeral Home. Jan will be laid to rest at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens following the funeral service.
