Jewell G. Shikles

Jewell G. Shikles, 87, passed away on March 12, 2015. He was born, January 12, 1928, in Russellville, Missouri to Edward and Mary Ann Shikles. He was the third of six children. In 1952, he wed Joann Maurer and they raised their five children together in Shawnee, Kansas.

Jewell was in the United States Army Air Force and served in Korea. He was a member of the American Legion for 30 years. He was a machinist for 25 years, and then changed vocations to become a Commercial Realtor for over 30 years.

Jewell was a hardworking man with a lot of integrity. He influenced the lives of many young men during his years as a baseball, basketball, and track coach. He enjoyed spending time with his wife of 62 years, Joann, and his dog, Red, at their farm in Parker, Kansas. Jewell will be remembered for his beautiful blue eyes and smile, his gentle demeanor, and his devotion to his family.

Jewell was preceded in his death by his parents and his brother, Ewing Shikles. Survivors include his wife, Joann Shikles; his five children, Steve (Lisa) Shikles, Julanne (John) Patrick, Marianne (O.B.) O'Brien, Lori (Steen) Jorgensen, and Rosann Shikles; his 10 grandchildren Julia Patrick-Kozlowski, Natalie Patrick-Knox, Emily Patrick-Deddens, Danielle O'Brien, Edward Shikles, Henry Shikles, Julianne O'Brien, Fara Shikles, Nicholas Jorgensen, and Ethan Jorgensen; his 2 great-grandchildren Jewell Patrick-Deddens and Isaac Patrick-Knox; and his siblings, Vivian McCarty, Bonnie Smith, Darvin Shikles, and Elwyn Shikles; a sister-in-law, Ethel Shikles and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Shawnee with the burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends are welcome to attend a visitation from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 16 at Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee, where a rosary recitation will be held at 5:45 p.m.

His family would like to thank Sharon Lane Health Services for their loving care of Jewell for the past two years. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society (www.lls.org) or to Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
