John Allen, 78, of Shawnee, KS passed away Saturday, September 18, 2021 at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission.
A service will be 6 p.m. Thursday, September 23, 2021 at the Amos Family Funeral Home; visitation will follow the service until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. John will be laid to rest at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116; or the Gary Sinise Foundation, P.O. Box 368, Woodland Hills, CA 91365.
John was the oldest of 7 children born to the late Herbert and Mary (Connell) Allen in Kansas City, MO on May 16, 1943. He graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1961 and earned an associate’s degree from Kansas City Kansas Community College in 1963. John enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve’s and was called to active duty during the Vietnam War. He served on the USS Cochrane in the Gulf of Tonkin. After being discharged from the military, John met and married his wife, Sue Callahan on September 19, 1970. John was a warehouseman for over 40 years before retiring in 2003. He was a 47 year member of Peter Smith American Legion Post #327. John was a voracious reader, and enjoyed reading about history and geography.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Stephen and Michael Allen. John is survived by his caring wife of 50 years, Sue Allen; his daughters, Megan Oetting and husband Chris; Carey Cumper and husband Gary; Kate Allen; grandson, Luke Cumper; brothers, Jim Allen and wife Julie; Jerry Allen; sisters, Kathleen Chirpich and husband Tom; Margaret Allen McFarllin and many nieces, nephews and friends.
