John Clinton Brookshier

July 26, 1920 — November 16, 2021

John Clinton Brookshier, 101, died November 16, 2021, in Shawnee, Kansas. He was the only child of Harry L. and Effie K. Brookshier and was born July 26, 1920, in Wichita Falls, Texas. He spent most of his life in northern Missouri graduating as valedictorian from Jamesport, Missouri, high school. He served in World War II as a part of the 352nd Fighter Squadron in the Army Air Force in Colchester, England, as an armorer for P47 Warhawk fighter planes. He achieved the rank of sergeant and was awarded 1 Silver Star, 1 Bronze Star, WWII Victory medal and ribbon, European African Middle Eastern ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and the Distinguished Unit badge. Returning to Kansas City after the war, he married Mary Lou Hammond on October 25, 1947. They celebrated 74 years of marriage. He was a senior accountant at Bendix Corporation and retired after 33 years in 1985.

He was a man of many abilities and interests. He designed and created furniture and enjoyed all types of woodworking. He also designed the house they lived in for 61 years. He was a woodcarver and jewelry maker creating many unique pieces which are family keepsakes. He loved learning and technology and even purchased a smart phone at age 100. He was not afraid to take on a challenge and had an amazing ability to read a manual and then figure out a solution. He enjoyed bowling and square dancing and continued these for many years.

John was a quiet and thoughtful man who deeply loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Mary, and his daughters: Susan Rhea and husband Jim; Sheryl Oshel and husband Rusty; and Diana Voss and husband Doug; niece Cathy Metz and husband Tom: Grandchildren Gretchen Chudy, Texas; Heather Enoch, Kenya; Annie Taylor, Overland Park; Reed Oshel, Liberty; John Oshel, Overland Park; Rachel Dart, Olathe; and Kaylin Disney, Colorado; great-nephew Clinton, great-nieces Cheryl Metz, Columbia; Lisa Cook and husband Walter, Mission; and 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 27, 2021, at 2:00 PM, at Amos Family Funeral home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS.
