John William Browning

b. August 14, 1952

John William Browning, 61, made his journey to the arms of His loving Father in heaven, on December 22, 2013.

John was born in Independence, MO on August 14, 1952, the son of James and Jeanne Browning who preceded him in death. His older brother James Browning, his lifelong companion and confidant, preceded him in death in 2006.

He was a 1970 graduate of Truman High School, lettering in wrestling. John was an Eagle Scout, and a warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He graduated from the University of Central Missouri and received a Master's Degree in Public Administration from UMKC. Upon completion of training at the JCCC Police Academy, he became an officer with the Lenexa Police Department in 1975. During his long tenure there, he was a Sergeant and a member of the SWAT team. He retired in 2002.

John is survived by the love of his life, Maureen Fitzgerald Newton, his two sons, Kellen Browning and Cole Browning, and his sister Cindy Long Obenhaus and brother-in-law, Steve. He also leaves 2 nieces, 2 nephews, 3 grand nieces and 4 great nephews, and a host of family and friends who loved him dearly.

John had a lust for life-hunting, fishing, the Mizzou Tigers, his Harley and trips to Sturgis SD, fireworks on the 4th, his adventures with his police buddies…more stories than we can count will keep our memories of our beloved John with us. We want to thank the Fitzgerald family-especially Andy, Tyler, Jesse, Sheila, Peggy, and Laura for their devotion and care for John; the staff of The Gables in Overland Park, Crossroads Hospice and all the friends and family who faithfully visited and loved on John these last few years.
