John “Jack” Mccarthy

July 13, 1934 — July 11, 2017

Jack McCarthy, 82, of Shawnee, KS, passed away on July 11th, 2017.  He was born in Kansas City, MO on July 13th, 1934 to John and Ellen McCarthy.  He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War on the USS Essex.  Jack worked for Yellow Freight until retiring in 1995.  An Irishman at heart, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid golfer.  Jack was not happy unless he got you to laugh or at least smile.  He was loved by all and will be sorely missed. He is survived by his loving wife, Bettie, of 60 years; sons, Brian (Mary); Daniel (Susan); Johnny (Velinda); daughter, Kathleen (Bob) Hampton; grandchildren, Michael; Delaney; Katie and Joe.  Jack was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Banner; brother, Don McCarthy; and sister Kay McGann.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 15th at 10:00 AM at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 8311 W. 93rd St, Overland Park, KS.  Mass will immediately follow at 11:00 AM.  Burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Jack’s honor to The American Cancer Society, 1100 Pennsylvania Ave, Kansas City, MO 64105.
