John James Riscoe, 90, Overland Park, KS passed away Monday, July 21, 2014 at Villa St. Francis, Olathe, KS surrounded by his wife and family.
John was born, December 29, 1923 in Kansas City, MO to Cyril and Nell Riscoe. He was a 1941 graduate of De La Salle High School and earned his BS degree from Rockhurst College in 1949. John was a veteran of the US Army during WWII, stationed in Luzon, Philippines. He was a staff sergeant who was awarded a Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, APT Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star. John met the love of his life, Lila Schwarz and they were married on August 28, 1948.
John had a strong faith in God and dedicated his life to his wife and family and led by example with kindness and love. He always had a kind word for everyone. His sense of humor and quick wit will be greatly missed. "Too soon you get old, too late you get smart", was a favorite quote of John's.
John was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Lawrence Riscoe and aunt, Mayme Conroy. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Lila A. Riscoe; daughter, Christine M. Riscoe, Roeland Park, KS; seven sons, John J. (Carol) Riscoe, Jr., Evergreen, CO, Mark E. (Linda) Riscoe, Leawood, KS, Jerry M. (Marilyn) Riscoe Overland Park, KS, Joe V. (Joan) Riscoe, Overland Park, KS Michael K., Ph.D (Terry) Riscoe, Tualatin, OR, Ed M. (Sherrill) Riscoe, Olathe, KS and Bob H. (Amy) Riscoe, Overland, Park, KS; 25 grandchildren: Dr. Elizabeth (Dr. Matthew) Hastings, Kelly Riscoe, Eric (Chelsea) Riscoe, Andrew Riscoe, Amy (Matt) Warren, Michael (Whitney) Riscoe, Lori Riscoe, Angie Clayton, Father Barry Clayton, Matt Clayton, Mackenzie Riscoe, Kim (Chris) Ness, Scott Riscoe, Sara Riscoe, Susan Riscoe, Erin (Nick) Meermeier, Allison Riscoe, Casey Riscoe, Cindy Riscoe, Sgt. Steve (Julie) Riscoe USMC, Kevin Riscoe, Molly Riscoe, Emily Riscoe, Hank Riscoe and Mary Kate Riscoe; and ten great grandchildren, Alex Hastings, Benjamin Hastings, Kayden Riscoe, Jack Warren, Austin Riscoe, Audrey Riscoe, Addison Ness, Natalie Ness, Marley Riscoe and Mila Riscoe.
John will be greatly missed as a husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Thursday, July 24 at St. Pius X Catholic Church; burial in the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Visitation will be 9-10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, where a rosary recitation will be at 10:00 a.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to either Villa St. Francis Nursing Center or St. Pius X Catholic Church.
