John A. Risner, Sr., 91, of Shawnee, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2012, at his home.
John was born February 27, 1921, to the late Clydas and Chloe Risner in Thayer, Missouri. He graduated from Argentine High School in 1939. After high school John joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. In May of 1941 he married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Barr in Argentine, KS. They were married for 70 years before she preceded him in death on November 25, 2011. In 1942 John enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and served in the South Pacific during World War II. John was an active member of the Shawnee Church of the Nazarene and enjoyed volunteering and helping out where needed.
He was a beloved father and mentor to his children and devoted husband. John is survived by his daughter Karen O'Hara; a son John A. Risner, Jr. and his wife Cindy; a sister, Mary Pountain and husband Gerald; a brother in law, Arthur Burr; 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be from 9:00-10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 14, 2012, at the Shawnee Church of the Nazarene, 5539 Quivira Road, Shawnee, Kansas 66216. Funeral service will follow at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, 6800 W. 93rd Street, Overland Park, Kansas 66216.
