John Anthony Vogrin, III, 77, of Lenexa, KS, passed away Thursday, June 17, 2021. He was born on March 20, 1944, in Kansas City, KS, to John and Josephine Vogrin.
John served in the US Army Special Forces as a Green Beret. After his military service he began his career as a sheet metal tradesman with the local union #2. While he worked long hours every week, he always made time for family and friends. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and boating. John was highly creative, always tinkering with old broken motors and parts, turning them into new inventions. He was the original MacGyver and he could fix just about anything with anything. If you spent any amount of time with him then you likely shared some of his homemade wine or moonshine and listened to some of the most unbelievable stories of when he was young and dumb, as he would say. But young and dumb he was never. The man was one of the smartest there was. His brain did not work like most. He had the uncanny ability to think outside the box and solve problems in the most obscure way. If you knew him, you have learned from him. He loved to teach and share his knowledge and skills. He spent his last years living his dream on Table Rock Lake with his best friend and love Patricia McKinney. Together they cast many lures and caught many sunsets.
John is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret. He is survived by his sons, John (Kristen) Vogrin IV, Greg (Marsha) Vogrin; his beloved partner, Patricia C. McKinney; grandsons, Tanner Vogrin, Grant Vogrin; and sister, Jeanette O’Connor.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 24, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church from 9:30-10:30 a.m. with a funeral mass to immediately follow.
