John W. Zimmer, known affectionately as Big Zimm, passed away on February 28, 2024, in Kansas City, Kansas, after a courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Born on April 21, 1972, in Des Moines, Iowa, he lived a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments.
Big Zimm was a dedicated Banker who found joy in spending time with his pride and joy, his babies Gabby and Kinley. When he wasn't showering them with love, he could be found surrounded by friends, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, Pittsburg Steelers, and Kansas City Chiefs, or engaging in friendly matches of dominos and washers.
Known for his beautiful deep voice, tender hugs, quick wit and infectious laughter, Big Zimm had a way of making everyone around him smile. He was an incredibly loving and devoted father, son, brother, and friend whose presence will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his mother Kathy Zimmer, father Larry Zimmer, brother Steve Zimmer, sister-in-law Tara Zimmer, daughter Gabriella (“Gabby”) Zimmer, daughter Kinley (“Kinners”) Zimmer, and nephew Eli (“E”) Zimmer. Big Zimm is preceded in death by Cousin Toni Dickey, Grandfather John H. Zimmer, Grandmother Juanita Zimmer, Grandfather Maurice Johnson, and Grandfather Lucille Johnson.
Services to celebrate Big Zimm's life will be held in both Kansas City and Iowa. The Kansas City visitation will take place at Amos Family Funeral Home on March 6th from 5-7pm, followed by the funeral service at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church on March 7th at 10:30am. In Iowa, visitation and funeral services will be held at Oakwood United Methodist Church on March 8th and March 9th, respectively. The burial service will be at Greenwood Friends Cemetery in Ankeny, Iowa.
Big Zimm's zest for life and infectious spirit will be remembered and cherished by all who had the honor of knowing him. May he rest in peace knowing that his legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched.
