Jay was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in Montague and Whitehall, MI. Received his Bachelors degree in Architectual Engineering from Grand Valley University in Michigan. Was drafted into the Army and served at Ft. Carson, CO, with a rank of Sgt, honorably discharged in 1974. Jay's civilian career was as a Commercial Construction Manager for several major brands.
Jay loved his children and provided them with a rich variety of opportunities. He was a 4-H leader in several specialty areas. He loved horses, dogs, gardening, painting, reading, photography and watching educational and history TV. For many years, the family raised and showed Harlequin Great Danes under the Hedgebrook Farms name. He professionally handled and finished many champions in other breeds as well. After he retired from handling the family turned to French Bulldogs which he loved as well.
He was an excellent marksman and taught his family to shoot a variety of firearms including black powder. He recently was teaching Michael and Sammie archery. He supported his children in many activities. He made beautiful wedding cakes for his children and stunning birthday cakes. Kept the family in home baked cookies. Loved birthdays for his children and the holidays. Favorite holiday, July 4th, always a really huge celebration shared by the whole family. There were few things in the house or equipment he couldn't fix.
Jay and I were married on June 7, 1980. We purchased our acreage so we could have our horses nearby and then we were bitten by the dog show bug. He dreamed in Technicolor and always worked to make those dreams for us all to come true. He loved sailing and dreamed of taking a journey from the Great Lakes down the East Coast. That dream was never achieved but he dreamed it! He was supportive of all my dreams and achievements in life. Loved me regardless.
Visitation from 1 p.m to 2 p.m. with memorial service following at 2 p.m. at the Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, KS.
