Joseph Lloyd Mayo, 89, passed away on July 12, 2018 in Liberty, Missouri. Joe was born in Mount Vernon, Illinois in 1929, the youngest of four sons born to Daniel Ivan and Grace Mae (Wells) Mayo. He grew up in Mount Vernon with his mother and step-father, George Herbert Williamson, receiving his formal education at Mount Vernon Township High School and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Sixty-eight years ago, on August 18, 1950, Joe married his high school sweetheart, Mildred JoAnn Borland, and they settled in Mount Vernon, eventually moving west, first to Webster Groves, MO, in 1957, then to the Kansas City area in 1969, finally settling in Shawnee, KS in 1974.

Joe was a decorated veteran of the Korean War. Using the GI Bill he earned a BA degree from SIU. He taught at Hixon Junior High School in Webster Groves, Mo from 1957 to 1967, when he switched to retail sales in electronics. During his 40 years in Shawnee he served as the Director of Old Shawnee Town and the Director of the Shawnee Chamber Of Commerce. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Shawnee Historical Society, Shawnee Lions Club, and VFW.

In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his wife JoAnn, his eldest son, Daniel Edward Mayo, brothers Ivan Wells, Gerald Lee, and Loren Ray Mayo, half-brother Harold Williamson, step-brothers Richard and Robert Williamson, and step-sister Gladys (Williamson) Pearce. Surviving him are his son Michael Alan Mayo and wife Megan, daughter Deborah Susan Dooley and husband Jack, grandchildren Rachael Mayo, Michelle (Dan) Zastrow, Kelly (Joey) Stoll, Thomas (Bethany) Mayo, Erin (Mike) Noah, Brett (Kelly) Dooley, Eva (Christopher) Abella, and Henry Dooley, and great grandchildren Lillian, Arianna, and Penelope Noah, Gwendolyn and Heidi Stoll, and Liam and Maeve Dooley.

A memorial service will start at 1:30 pm Sunday, August 26, 2018 at Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS, followed by inurnment at Pleasant View Cemetery, Shawnee, KS. At 4:00 pm the Shawnee Lions Club will dedicate a bench in honor of Joe and JoAnn Mayo in Shawnee Town, 11501 W. 57th St., Shawnee, KS.
