Joseph L. Meyer
Joe lost his life in a tragic accident on Thursday, April 29. He was born and raised in Huntingburg, Indiana, the first of James and LaVerne Schmitt Meyer’s ten children. After graduating from high school in 1972, Joe moved to Grandview, Missouri to attend technical school. He met his future wife, Lori Spieker, in 1980, and the two joined hands in marriage on October 30, 1982. Together they owned and operated several businesses, including their current one, Overland Tow Service. Their marriage was blessed with three children; sons Chris and Dusty, and daughter Hannah. Joe and Lori lived in Shawnee, Kansas for most of their married life, and were active in local parades, BBQ competitions and church functions.
Joe was a race car builder and drag racing enthusiast. He enjoyed racing the cars he built, and passed his love of the sport along to their children by building cars for each of them to race. He was an antique John Deere tractor and farm equipment aficionado, and served as an officer in the Greater Kansas City Area Two-Cylinder Club. Joe also enjoyed BBQ competitions, motorcycling, hunting and fishing. The joy he experienced in his life grew immeasurably as he became a wonderful grandfather to Brandon, Farrah, Calvin and James. In addition to being an exceptional husband, father, grandfather, brother, cousin and uncle, Joe was a friend to everyone he met.
Joe’s mother and father preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Lori, brothers Ed, Art, Randy, Pat, Paul, and Bob, sisters Mary Jo Fischer, Nancy Vogel, and Cathy Tretter, sons Chris (Jodie) and Dusty (Erin), daughter Hannah McPherson (Jon), grandsons Brandon, Calvin and James, and granddaughter Farrah.
