Josephine Gay Bell

April 20, 1931 — July 15, 2021

Josephine Gay (Bonney) Bell of Lenexa, Kansas, passed away on July 15, 2021, at the age of 90. The Celebration of Life service will be held Thursday, July 22nd at 3:30 PM in the Heritage Activity Center located on the Lakeview Village campus (9100 Park Street in Lenexa, Kansas).

Born April 20, 1931, as the only child to Robert Cecil and Amelia (Gay) Bonney, Gay enjoyed growing up in Roswell, New Mexico, and later bringing her husband and sons there from Prairie Village, Kansas, for special visits.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from the University of Kansas where she met her husband, Gay taught second grade elementary students until the birth of their two sons. However, she always shared her gift of teaching and reading to young children in numerous programs and opportunities.

Gay’s life was characterized by service to others through church, PEO, food pantry, reading programs, and endless outreaches of food, flowers, and other services to people needing help or encouragement.

Gay (aka as Jo G. Bell) was a noted children’s writer with several published series. Her pleasant personality was contagious to everyone she met. She had an uncanny ability to find happiness in her daily activities.

As a dedicated wife and mother, Gay treasured her family and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as Grandma/Gram and leaves behind many precious memories. Her vivacious personality always made people around her feel special.

She is survived by her husband David H. Bell of 67 magical years with many adventures; sons Steven Bell, Emporia, Kansas, and Christopher Bell, Olathe, Kansas; 7 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Interment will be at Oak Lawn Memorial Garden in Olathe, Kansas.

Memorial donations may be made to either the food pantry at Village Presbyterian Church where she had been a member for 50 years or PEO where she had been a member for nearly 70 years. Contributions may be sent in care of Amos Family Funeral Home & Crematory, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas 66203.
