Julia Caroline O'Neal Hines slipped the surly bonds of Earth on June 26, 2014 at Shawnee, KS. Her passing to the world beyond was occasioned by her continuing struggle with kidney failure. She leaves behind the true Handsome Prince of her heart, her cherished husband, David Hines, her adored son Stephen (Andrea) Nefas, her beloved stepdaughter Angelina (Eric) Hines Hausey, amazing granddaughters Sydney and Alexandra Brown, and a host of dearly loved friends and relatives. Julie was an honors 1967 graduate of John Marshall High School in Los Angeles and attended UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara, graduating with a BA in Sociology in 1972 with an Art History minor. Julie liked to say that her life was rich in the magic of ordinary days. The daughter of Claude and Gettie O'Neal, from her youngest days she was possessed of extraordinary intelligence and a curious mind. She loved reading and learning and especially travelling to different lands and meeting new people. Her wandering feet took her hot air ballooning in Australia, snorkeling in Hawaii and the Great Barrier Reef, shopping in Europe and awestruck at the beauty of Japan. She was an accomplished genealogist and scrapbooker. Her eclectic collections included ampersands, armadillos and Eiffel Towers. She worked for many years in the medical insurance claims field before following her heart's desire to work in the travel industry. At the end of 2011 she was able to retire early and spent the next year visiting various friends and house-sitting in her beloved Hawaii. Julie always believed that her soul was Hawaiian and she was happier there than almost anywhere else on Earth (except when it came to being where David was).. Although she was one of the first women priests ordained by the Ecclesia Gnostica in Los Angeles, Julie did not believe in proselytizing and felt that her spiritual beliefs were extremely personal and private. She chose to do her ministry through volunteer work with the American Red Cross Disaster Services as well as Special Olympics Hawaii, Hawaii Opera Theatre, Beta Sigma Phi., American Association of University Women, Bay Area Women Against Rape, and various other organizations. She always said that while she couldn't afford to give a lot of money to charitable organizations, the thing she could give that was of the most value was her time, and she loved the time she spent doing volunteer work. At Julie's request, no services will be held. She would urge you to register as a donor of both organs and bone marrow to share the gift of life.
