Julius McFarlin was born November 3, 1922 to the late John T. McFarlin and Mary E (Knox) McFarlin. To this union eight children were born; with Julius being the fifth child. Julius was called to rest at Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas, on May 19, 2015. The gates of Heaven opened and Julius walked in to receive the "CROWN" … he so deserved. Julius accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Union Baptist Church, Conway, Arkansas where he faithfully served on the Usher Board. Julius attended Pine Street High School, Conway Arkansas then furthered his education at Dunbar Junior College, Little Rock. Arkansas. Julius was united in marriage to "The Love of His Life", Marzella Wilson and with this union five children were born, two daughters and three sons. Julius relocated his family to Merriam, Kansas in 1952, where he worked various jobs until gaining employment with General Motors Corporation and retired after twenty-seven years. He and his family united with Mt. Olive Baptist Church located in Merriam, Kansas where he served until his death. He was President of the Usher Board, Chairman of the Trustee Board and Sunday School Superintendent. Julius was an Icon in his Community serving in many capacities. He served as Councilman for the City of Merriam for nearly thirty-years, becoming the first African American to hold a political office. He was President of the Northeast Johnson County Branch of the N.A.A.C.P., for twenty-six years, where he holds a Lifetime Membership. He served in numerous other community organizations. Julius was truly a "Trailblazer". Julius' parents John T. and Mary E. McFarlin, his four brothers: Elmer, Carl, Eugene, Johnnie; one sister Arlee Pearson and his eldest son, Julius McFarlin Jr. preceded him in death. Julius leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of sixty-eight years, Marzella, two daughters, Sharon A Ross, Angela "Kay" Spencer, two sons, Robert (Yola), and Edwin Earl. Six Grandchildren, Tonia Morgan (Kenneth), Crystal Cooper (Drew), William, Jair, Cameron and Ashton. Six Great-Grandchildren, Ronald, Kennah, MyLeigh, Kenneth (Cheeks), Caleb, and princess Calea. Two sisters, Hazel Perry, (Lehman) and Mary McFarlin, both of Conway, Arkansas, and a host of Nephews, Nieces, Cousins, and other relatives. Julius also leaves to cherish his "Verbally Adopted Family" An Honorary Grand-Daughter, Stacie Schemmel, (Shawnee, Kansas), Mr. Stevie Mannery (Jefferson City, Missouri), Mr. and Mrs. Thomas and Yolanda Cylar (Stone Mountain, Georgia), and Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius and Johnniel Bowe (Glen Carbon, Illinois) and many other friends.
A visitation is set for 9:00 - 11:00 AM, Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Amos Family Funeral Home 10901 Johnson Drive Shawnee, Kansas 66203 with a Funeral Service immediately following at 11:00 AM also at the Funeral Home. Burial will take place 2:30 PM, Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions in Julius’s name may be made to the Wounded Warriors Fund or American Legion Post 327 or NAACP (N.E. Johnson County Branch) or Mount Olive Baptist Church-Trustee Board.
