Karl Kenneth Mairs, 84, formerly of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the Blackhawk Assisted Living, Spring Hill, Kansas.
Karl was born in Kansas City, Kansas, on April 15, 1925. He grew up in the Argentine area and graduated from Argentine High School in 1943. He was especially proud that his mother received his diploma because he had joined the USMC prior to his graduation ceremony to serve in WWII. Karl served in the USMC from1943-1946 in the Pacific Theatre. Following his return, he joined the Marine Reserves and was called to serve again from 1950-51 in the Korean War.
Karl retired from the Santa Fe Railroad in 1971 after 15 years. Karl retired from the Boilermakers Local #83 after more than 40 years.
Karl was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Jean (Neely) Mairs in 1996 and his parents, William A. and Orpha F. Mairs. He is survived by his only son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth R and Patricia Mairs of Overland Park, Kansas; sister, Alice Zimmerman, Bonner Springs, Kansas; brother and his wife, Lloyd and Marge Mairs, Leavenworth, Kansas; beloved grandchildren, Melissa Mairs, Jonathan (Katey) Mairs and Christopher (Tarah) Mairs and cherished great granddaughter, Trinity Mairs all of Overland Park, Kansas.
Memorial contributions may be made to either the American Heart Association or Disabled American Veterans.
Visitation and Funeral Service
Friends may call from 6-8 pm, Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the chapel; burial at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
