Kermalene "Kay" Skahan

June 14, 1934 — January 26, 2022

Shawnee

Kermalene "Kay" Skahan, age 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by all her children and grandchildren on Monday, January 26, 2022.

Kay was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1934 in Hutchinson, Kansas and as a young child thought the small town parades and fireworks were held in celebration of her birthday. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1952 and attended Salt City Business College in Wichita, Kansas.

She met the love of her life, partner in crime and best friend while working at State Farm. On December 27th, 1954 Kay married Paul Skahan at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Leavenworth, Kansas. They went on to help populate the city of Shawnee as best they could.

Kay loved life. She was funny, she was fierce, she was witty and  unpredictable. She was a dedicated daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved bowling and dancing, spending time with her kids, friends and anyone who might have stopped by. She loved to travel, to camp and to see the world. She was an avid reader, and never met a stranger. All were welcomed at her table and in her home; the Skahan front door didn’t even have a lock.

She always had a ready supply of snack pack pudding cups, and canned spray cheese ready for the grandkids and tacos for Ben. Kay would grab a catchers mitt and a cigarette and head out to the backyard to practice pitches with the boys and would have some epic dance parties with the girls. She was a great sport at playing Memory and Go Fish and happily watched My Dog Skip, the Little Rascals and Titanic more times than anyone should have to.

She will be missed by many but never forgotten.

She was proceeded in death by her husband of 47 years, Paul L. Skahan, her mother Hilma Jean Farlow Voss and her father Kermit Voss.

Survivors include her brother S. George Voss of Dodge City, Kansas, children Larry (Debbi) of Overland Park, Jeff (Kathy) of Gardner, Scott (Nancy), Dan (Susan), Shauna Porras (Ben), Kelli Alexander (Chris) and Michael (Julie) all of Shawnee, Kansas.

Grandchildren: Natalie Skahan, Benny Porras IV, Danny Paul Skahan (Stephanie), David Porras, Stefanie Welte (Jay), Samantha Skahan, Jake Porras (Samantha), Dylan Alexander (Cali), Jared Skahan, Haley Alexander, Cody Skahan, Megan Alexander, Rowen Skahan, Aidan Skahan, Connor Skahan, Carys Skahan, Gavin Skahan, Crew Skahan, and Presley Skahan.

Great grandchildren: Alysa Sisavath, Maverick Skahan-Meier, Stella Lux Skahan-Meier, Gabriel Porras, Hudson Welte, Lucy Welte, Wyatt Welte, Collin Skahan, River Alexander, Jaxton Porras and Henry Welte. As well as many, many nieces, nephews cousins and friends.

A visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shawnee with a funeral mass beginning at 10:30 am. Kermalene will be laid to rest beside her husband Paul at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa following the mass.
