Kurt Michael Barbour

October 5, 1966 — May 23, 2017

Kurt Michael Barbour, 50, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at his residence in Shawnee KS surrounded by his wife, 3 children, & mother. Kurt was diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic colon cancer in 2014 and withstood 73 chemo treatments, a clinical trial, immunotherapy treatments, & liver radiation.  Kurt always pushed himself to be & do more than most people expected of him and this attitude is what served him well in his fight with cancer. Kurt did not lose his battle because he never quit. Kurt was a faithful member of Lenexa Baptist Church and his relationship with God helped carry him through his journey.  His testimony throughout these past 3 years was very public and brought others who shared in his journey closer to Christ.

Kurt was born October 5, 1966 in Kansas City Missouri to Francis Deas Jr. and Marilyn Barbour. Survivors include his wife, Suzanne of 25 years, children; Jackson (Kylie Gravatt) Barbour, Payton and Hayden Barbour, granddaughter, Sawyer Barbour, brother, Kevin Barbour (Shannon). Kurt was preceded in death by his father, Deas Barbour Jr. Kurt grew up on a farm in Paola, Kansas helping his dad with the cattle and riding dirt bikes with his brother.  From a young age he excelled in athletics and making people laugh.  In high school, his outstanding work ethic and athletic ability won him the Elson award, the Good Kid Award and landed him in the Paola high school Hall of Fame. In 1985 Kurt went on to meet the love of his life, Suzanne (Lindsey) at a track meet in Louisburg, KS. They dated for 7 years before marrying in 1992. At Ottawa University Kurt became the recipient of the prestigious Dick Peter's Award for outstanding character and athletic ability. Kurt's college football coach Glenn Percy, said "Kurt is just a super young man, he is a good student with a 3.3 GPA, he is as steady as a rock and as far as I know, he has never missed a practice or a game in his four years".

Professionally, Kurt worked for twenty years in the pharmaceutical industry after graduating from Ottawa University in 1989 with a Bachelor's degree in Biology. After Kurt and Suzanne married they decided to start a family. Jackson was born in 1995 then Payton in 1997 and later Hayden in 1998. As a family, they shared a love of sports, vacationing and spending quality time together where laughter could be heard for miles. Out of all the things Kurt achieved in life, to him the greatest was the family he created with Suzanne and the legacy through them that he leaves behind. Kurt felt having the right perspective at every point in your life was important and a quote recently found that he had copied down said, "your perspective can be your passport or your prison".
