Leila Jane Burgert Whalen, 92, passed away February 3, 2018 (just 3 hrs 40 minutes before her 93rd birthday) at Garden Terrace Nursing Home, Overland Park KS. Leila was born February 4, 1925 in Hiawatha, KS to John and Felicia (Honey) Maye (Davis) Burgert. She married Charles D. Whalen on April 11, 1951.
After their marriage they moved to Newburyport, MA before moving back to Kansas in 1952. Leila was a member of the Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish, Overland Park, for 9 years before moving to Cure of Ares' Parish in 1961. Leila had varied interests over the years; square dancing, cooking, bowling, bridge, sewing, traveling, volunteering at Cure of Ares' and St Joseph hospital, playing the organ and painting. She was an accomplished secretary who retired 3 times.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter-in-law Peggy Whalen. Leila is survived by her step children: David Whalen & Gerri Young of Ocala FL, Michael & Sally Whalen, Wheatland MO, Virginia (Whalen) & Donald Liveley, Gardner KS and Richard & Pamela Whalen, Cameron MO. She is also survived by 14 Grandchildren, 25 Great-Grandchildren and 4 Great-Great Grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, February 9 at 9:00 AM at Ascension Catholic Church, 9510 W. 127th St, Overland Park KS, with mass following at 10:00 AM. Interment at Resurrection cemetery immediately following mass.
