Leonard Hanks, 85, Shawnee, Kansas, passed away Monday, July 25, 2011, at his home.

Leonard was born in Slater, Missouri, to William and Bernadine Hanks. He was a veteran of the US Navy during WWII. Leonard was present at the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima and received commendation for his service from the commander of the US Navy.

He retired from Southwestern Bell in 1979 after 35 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 327, St. Joseph Catholic Church and Telephone Pioneers of America.

Leonard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary (Keller) Hanks; two daughters, Lynne Koestner and husband, Mark, Creve Coeur, Missouri and Patricia Funk and husband, Richard, Freeman, Missouri; sister, Doris Calovich, Kansas City, Kansas; three grandchildren, Kevin Koestner and wife Suzanne (Elkins), Hilary Funk and George Funk; two great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Nickolas Koestner; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation and Funeral Service

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am, Saturday, July 30, 2011, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church; burial in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Shawnee, Kansas. Friends may call from 6-8 pm, Friday, July 29, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, where a Rosary Recitation will be at 6:00 p.m.
