Leonard Rial Hersh, Sr.

January 2, 1927 — March 9, 2016

Leonard R. Hersh, Sr., 89, of Merriam, KS passed away Wednesday March 9, 2016 at Sunrise of Leawood.

Leonard was born January 2, 1927 to the late Jerre Franklin and Miriam Caroline (Rial) Hersh in Kansas City, MO. He graduated from Shawnee Mission Rural High School in 1944 and went on to earn a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Kansas in 1950. Leonard was a member of Scout Troop 194 and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Later he served as Scout Master of Troop 293 for many years. Leonard served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean conflict. On September 20, 1952 he married Greydon Laaser in Rock Away Beach, MO.

Leonard was a lifelong member of Shawnee United Methodist Church, as well as a life-member of the National Rifle Association, Sheet Metal Union Local No. 2 for over 40 years, and was a former member of the Winnebago International Travelers, Winnie Motor R.V. club, Good Sam Travel Club, Family Motor Coach Association and Freightliner Chassis Owners Club. He enjoyed camping and traveling to all 50 states. He traveled by motorhome in 10 foreign countries and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and outdoor activities.

Leonard is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Greydon Hersh; four sons, Leonard Hersh, Jr. and wife Joyce; David Hersh and wife Barbara; James Hersh and wife Michelle; Karl Hersh; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a sister Caroline Brock and a brother, Jerre F. Hersh, Jr.

Visitation and Services

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday March 18 at Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Shawnee United Methodist Church, 10700 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS 66203; with burial following in Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City.
