Lester A. Ottaway, Jr., 84, of Overland Park, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2015, at his home. Les was born May 15, 1930 to the late Gladys and Lester A. Ottaway, Sr. in Wichita, Kansas. He was the 7th son of 8 children. At the early age of 14, Les' lifelong love of aviation was sparked before he first soloed in a Stearman PT17. In February 1953, Les married the love of his life, Mickey. She preceded him in death after 61 years of marriage in 2014.
After earning two bachelor degrees from Wichita State University, Les earned his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from UMKC in 1963. He operated his own dental practice in Prairie Village for over 35 years. Les volunteered his time at many free clinics in the metro area, the Kansas School for the Deaf, and 9 years of delivering Meals on Wheels.
He was an avid pilot, enjoyed photography, wine making, beer making, and woodworking making his own grandfather clock, and even found the time to teach himself how to sew. Les left Whole Foods Market in November 2014 after 12 years of service.
Les is survived by his daughter, Terri Ottaway Ortego; a son, Lt. Col. Douglas (Margaret) Ottaway, USAF (Ret); grandchildren, Ryan Ottaway; Cody Ottaway; Meghan (Parc) Masterson; Mallory Ortego; Miles Ortego; Mackenzie Ortego; three great granddaughters, Ryder Ortego, Avery Masterson and Merit Masterson; and brother, Donald Ottaway, Lt. Col. USAF (Ret).
A Celebration of Les' life will be 10 a.m., Saturday, February 21, 2015, at the Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee.
