Lila J. Collette

July 5, 1931 — October 31, 2021

Lila J. (Shamburg) Collette passed away on October 31, 2021 at the age of 90 in Shawnee, Kansas, Born July 5, 1931 in Scottsville, Kansas, to Virgil Shamburg and Velma (Sadler) Shamburg, third in a family of 11 children. After graduating from Scottsville High School, she moved to Concordia, Kansas, where she met her future husband. She married Leland M. Collette in 1950 where they began their marriage in Concordia, Kansas. When Leland took a job as a lineman for the telephone company, they began a four-year adventure moving every few weeks in a small trailer to towns throughout northeast Kansas with three toddlers (around 30 at one count), while Leland installed telephone lines. They settled in Kansas City, Kansas in 1956 as the kids started school. Together they raised eight children in western Wyandotte County, moving to Johnson County in 1976. Lila was a great cook, seamstress, and a master shopper finding all the best bargains! She stayed at home until the kids were mostly grown, then worked for a few years in food service in the Kansas City and Shawnee Mission school districts. She enjoyed traveling with Leland to south Texas after their retirement. Lila was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1993. She loved playing cards, was competitive and proud of her wins at cribbage and poker tournaments, playing in tournaments well into her 80's. Lila was proud of her family, had many lifelong friends and made new friends wherever she went. Lila always had a smile on her face and a ready laugh. She is missed by all of us.

Lila is predeceased by her husband Leland (in 1993) after 43 years of marriage; by her mother and father, and by her sisters: Roberta Peters, Edith Pilcher and Neva Maxfield, and brothers Duane, Daniel, Lenus, Leslie, and Ronald Shamburg.

She is survived by her eight children: Pat (Kris Hicks) Collette, Mike (Judy) Collette, Sue (Keith) Meyer, Julie (Mark) Buehler, Cindy (Ed) Stephens, Cheryl (Clint) Spoor, Brenda (Mark) Mosher and Greg (Kindel) Collette. She also is survived by 26 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and sisters Telva Swenson and Linda Donnelly.
