Linda M. Martinez

Linda M. Martinez, 92, of Lenexa, Kansas, died March 16, 2010 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

Linda was born in Argentine, Kansas, to Thomas W. and Rachel E. Martinez. She attended Argentine High School. In 1940, she graduated from Trinity Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing, became an RN, and a member of the hospital's staff. In 1942, shortly after the United Stated entered WWII, Linda joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. where she served as a surgical nurse with the 91st General Hospital in the European Theatre. She was stationed in Oxford, England and, later, in Liege, Belgium. After the war ended in 1945, Linda was discharged and returned to Kansas City. She was employed in a physician's office. In 1963, she was employed by Baptist Memorial Hospital, first as a staff nurse and later, as a cardiac intensive care nurse. In 1970, she joined the staff of Kansas City General Hospital as a clinical nurse. She retired in 1983.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, George and Thomas Martinez, and by a sister, Grace Lowther. She is survived by cousins.

The friends of Linda wish to express appreciation to the nursing staff in the progressive care unit at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Salvation Army or the Kansas City Public Library.

Graveside Services

Cremation with a committal service and military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 19, 2010 at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
