Lorene M. Verstraete, 83, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away January 31, 2014. She was born November 2, 1930, in Shawnee, Kansas, to Alois and Helena DeWitte. She attended St. Joseph grade school and high school graduating in 1948.

Lorene was united in marriage to Julius A. Verstraete on October 4, 1949. She spent her life working along side her husband on the family farm and greenhouse. Verstraete Gardens was established in 1957 and operated until 1999.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers George and Maurice DeWitte. Lorene is survived by her husband of 64 years Julius A. Verstraete; son Roger Verstraete (Janet); daughter Christine L. Haubein (Ted); five grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation and Funeral Mass

Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at Amos Family Funeral Home & Crematory, where a Rosary will be recited at 6 pm. Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 6, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Shawnee, Kansas. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
