Lorraine Dixon

June 28, 1935 — November 23, 2011

Lorraine L. Dixon, 76, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2011.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 28, at Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Shawnee. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., at the funeral home.

Lorraine was born June 28, 1935, in Humeston, Iowa. During her childhood, Lorraine lived in the towns of Liberty Center, Spirit Lake, and Indianola, Iowa, where she graduated high school. She received her Bachelor's degree from Simpson College in Indianola, where she met the love of her life, Doyle Dixon.

Lorraine and Doyle were married in 1958 and lived happily together for the following 52 years, until Doyle’s death in October, 2010. Their devotion to each other and to their family throughout their lives has been an inspiration to all who knew them.

She is survived by her sister, Maurine Stone, of Des Moines, IA; two daughters, Laurie Dixon and partner Lynn Beatty of Grain Valley, MO, and Jennifer Dixon and partner Teree Guynn of Kansas City, MO; a son, Kevin Dixon and wife Jane of Lawrence, Kan., and grandchildren Kaitlyn, Sean and Bailey Dixon, also of Lawrence.

Lorraine and Doyle lived in Des Moines, Iowa for their first 23 years together. Lorraine worked as a legal secretary for Harold Hughes, who went on to a notable political career, until 1969, when she was able to give all her time to caring for her family. She was a dedicated, active and involved full-time mother throughout her children's school years, during which time she also remained active in her Alpha Chi Omega alum club, raising money and awareness in the fight against childhood cystic fibrosis.

After the family relocated to Shawnee, Kan. in 1981, Lorraine returned to work as a legal secretary in 1982, working for attorney Joe B. Vise in Shawnee until she retired in 1999. For several years, Lorraine and Doyle traveled America as Doyle’s work required, enjoying countless hours and days of being together during “side trips” around the country. They loved exploring new places and seeing the beauty of the countryside, and their bond grew even deeper.

Lorraine’s highest calling, deepest joys, and greatest gifts were to her family. Being with her children and grandchildren continued to bring her happiness until the end of her life. The legacy she leaves us is the very picture of what it means to be a wife, mother and grandmother, and her memory will continue to inspire our family for generations to come.

Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m., Monday, November 28, 2011, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Burial in Pleasant View Cemetery. The family suggests Memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
