Lowell L. Baird

Lowell L. Baird, 99, of Lenexa, Kansas, passed away December 29, 2009.

He was born in Siloam Springs, Arkansas on April 15, 1910, and lived most of his life in the Wyandotte and Johnson County, Kansas areas. After graduating from Wyandotte High School in 1929, he served an apprenticeship under the Kansas City Stereotyper's and Electrotyper's Union and worked many years as a journeyman plate maker. He retired from the Kansas City Kansan in 1978 after 28 years as mechanical superintendent. Previous employers were Continental Color Press and Rotogravure Co.

A veteran of World War II, he was never in combat, but served as First Sergeant with the 567th Quartermaster Railhead Company at Liege, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. He survived buzz bomb attacks on the city of Liege and was later injured in a land mine explosion near Furth, Germany.

He was a member of Lenexa United Methodist Church and was formerly active in trade and civic groups.

Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Louise Baird; a sister, Edna Irish; a sister-in-law, Imogene Baird; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lenexa United Methodist Church, 9138 Caenen Lake Road, Lenexa, Kansas 66215.

Visitation and Memorial Service

A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, Thursday, December 31, 2009, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 pm.
