Lucy "Lannie" O'Kane

January 15, 1951 — September 6, 2021

Lucy "Lannie" J. O’Kane passed away Monday, September 6th, 2021, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center after a brief illness. A private funeral will be held by the family, with a Celebration of Life to follow in the future.

Lannie was born January 15th, 1951 in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Evelyn and Jack Craig. She married her sweetheart, Roger O’Kane, on September 4, 1970, in Kansas City, MO.

Lannie had four passions: family, gardening, shopping, and sweets. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild were the center of her life, as evidenced by the numerous pictures of family she had hanging in all the rooms of her house. Lannie was known to drive several hours for a ball game, award ceremony, or even just to say hello to those near and dear to her. Lannie never knew a stranger. She was friendly to all, and after just a conversation or two, she considered you a part of her family.

Lannie loved to garden and was often found outside working in her yard. Perhaps her upbringing had something to do with this; as the daughter of a Navy serviceman, she lived in many different states and these experiences allowed her to see a variety of flora and fauna. Hawaii was by far her favorite state, and her love of tropical plants and flowers was well known. To say that she had a green thumb is an understatement. She enjoyed the challenge of nursing frail plants back to health, and was wildly successful in doing so. She was equally talented in designing and landscaping her yard, which was beautiful in all four seasons of the year.

Anyone who knew Lannie knew that she loved to shop, especially for bargains, whether she needed something or not! No sale was too small for Lannie, and the better the deal, the more likely she was to buy it. Garage sales and thrift stores were particular favorites of her to visit, and if she found a plant or flower on sale, it would quickly go in her shopping cart. As testament to her generosity, she frequently passed her bargain finds on to family and friends.

Lannie never met a sweet she didn’t like. From cookies and pastries to donuts and cakes, her sweet tooth was notorious! She started each and every day with a bite of something sweet, and there was not a single meal in which (regardless of how full she was) she turned dessert down. Often, she asked for second helpings of desserts! There was never a lack of candy, cookies, muffins or cake when you were in the presence of Lannie, and she always loved to encourage others to eat dessert too.

Her infectious laugh, her love of watching funny animal videos, her funny pronunciation of words, and her strong and passionate work ethic are just a few of the countless things we will miss about Lannie.

She is preceded in death by her husband Roger Dale O’Kane, Evelyn Snodgrass (mother) and Jack Craig (father). She is survived by her children; Steve O’Kane (Angela), Jeremy O’Kane, Shawn O’Kane (Noel) and Amanda O’Kane-Warren (Jeremy); eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Other survivors are her siblings Debbie Craig-Clifford, Denise Spurlock and Tim Craig.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Garden Club of Shawnee.
