Linda “Lynn” K Sopko, 74, of Shawnee, KS, passed away on Nov. 3, 2021. She was born on April 28, 1947 in Independence, MO. She was a graduate of Shawnee Mission North High School 1965.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Michael S. Sopko, daughter, Melissa Mac Donald, parents, Genna Lubbe, James E Griffin, Norman & Jean Walters, brothers, James Griffin III and Tom Griffin.

She is survived by her son, Michael A. Sopko, daughter, Lisa Sopko-Fogarty and husband Kevin Fogarty, son-in-law Kenneth MacDonald, brothers, Vance D Walters, Richard (Diane) Talley, Ed Griffin Sr., Keith Griffin, Richard Griffin, sisters, Donna J. Ranes, Robbin (T.J.) McGuire, Diana Gardner; many nieces and nephews.

Lynn met the love of her life while working at her Dad Norman’s camera store. Seeing him standing by the Coke machine, she knew Michael was the man she would marry and they did on October 21, 1967. They purchased Lynn’s childhood home in Shawnee and raised three children. Lynn was a stay at home Mom for the early years and went back to work when the children were school age. First, Speed Clean Laundromat in Shawnee then Long Motors in Lenexa where she worked 20+ years starting as an order operator and eventually lead monitor.

She was an avid gardener, canning her own produce. She loved animals especially horses and in her later years was devoted to her dogs, Solly and Ashley, cats Scruffy and Fluffy. She played the guitar and wrote her own songs, participated in charitable events like the MS 150 bike ride and Walk for Mankind. She volunteered at the food pantry and assisted the elderly (Dr.’s appointments, grocery shopping, etc.)

She skydived for the first time in her late 60’s. She loved fishing and got the thrill of a lifetime at nearly 70, when she and her daughter landed a 50lb. flathead.

Diabetes plagued her later in life but the Olathe Health System helped her get it under control and published an article about her battle in their Current Care Publication.

Special thanks to Phyllis Sue McGuire, for her friendship, love and supportive care following Lynn’s diagnosis of Ovarian cancer and loss of her eyesight.

May Linda and Michael walk in the light of God’s love together.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or the Great Plains SPCA in Merriam.
