Mangalbhai Patel

April 1, 1945 — April 24, 2021

A life well lived...

Mangalbhai Somdas Patel was born in Untva, India. He attended college at M G Science Institute in Ahmedabad, India. He was married to Kanchan Maneklal Patel on May 21st, 1967. He soon left for America in 1968 to obtain his Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Tennessee Tech University. After graduation, with difficulties in pursuing engineering, he purchased a Dunkin Donuts in Nashville, TN. This was where he started his business career and began his family (Lina and Reena were born in Nashville). In 1983, he sold his business and bought the Twin City Motel in Festus, MO. (Shriti was born in Crystal City, MO). Later he purchased the Gateway Inn in Pevely, MO. He used this property as a launching pad for the business careers for many of his family members as they immigrated from India. In 2012, Mangalbhai and Kanchan sold their business, retired, and moved to Shawnee, KS.

He was best known for his never ending passion for knowledge and the importance of a solid education. He was most proud of his three daughters, their successful careers, and the families they started.

He passed away peacefully at home. He had been surrounded by family for the last 3 weeks while on hospice care but it seemed he needed his family to leave for him to move on. Well, he got his way because he passed on his own terms, just as he did in life. He lived an incredible life and sacrificed much so that his family would have a very blessed and privileged life. He was small in stature but his presence was always felt in any room and his heart was so generous to anyone who needed help. It felt unfair that just a few years into retirement he would be diagnosed with Parkinson's and then so quickly decline six years later. This last year was his hardest with this disease and then a pandemic also happened. We were so grateful to be able to keep him home these last few months and especially the last few weeks. Thankfully, he was still aware of who we were and able to communicate with us almost to the end. He will be so missed but we are also incredibly relieved he has finally found some peace. We will have to hold onto our beliefs that his soul will reconnect with us in the future.

He is survived by his wife Kanchan, and three daughters. Lina (Ryan, Himani, Eliana) in Shawnee, KS. Reena (Anaiya, Maliya) in Laguna Niguel, CA. And Shriti (Dhaval, Juhi, Jayden) in Lemont, IL.
