Margaret Zoll Amos, age 84, died peacefully May 30, 2015, at Brookdale Shawnee. She was born July 18, 1930, in Leavenworth County, Kansas, to Benjamin and Lela (Thomas) Zoll. Her parents owned Zoll Dairy in Leavenworth County, Kansas, where she helped bottle and deliver milk as a young girl. She loved music and played the piano and the banjo. She and two of her sisters travelled around Kansas performing as a trio at various venues. She attended Lansing High School and graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1948. After high school she worked for the American Red Cross at Ft. Leavenworth.
Margaret married Gene Amos on March 8, 1953, at Wallula Christian Church in Leavenworth County, Kansas. After marriage she began working at the Amos Family Funeral Home, the family business, until the age of 83. She and Gene were a great couple and worked together to build a business and saw Shawnee thrive and grow. Margaret was a friendly and gracious lady who always made new acquaintances feel like long-time friends.
Through the years Margaret was involved in various activities while raising her family. She sang in the choir at Overland Park Christian Church and also Merriam Christian Church; was a member of the singing group "The Simmonettes;" she was very active in the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, and was a Chamber Ambassador and also helped start the program "Kansas Art to You;" she was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Shawnee Mission Chapter. In 2011 she was chosen to be the Grand Marshal of the Old Shawnee Days Parade. Margaret and Gene were both multiple Paul Harris Fellows with Rotary International. Additionally, she was proud to have found a descendant from the Mayflower, Richard Warren.
Margaret is preceded in death by her husband, Eugene "Gene" Amos in 2009; her mother, father, sister, Peggy Hill; and aunt, Sallie Zoll. She is survived by her son, Gregg (Brenda) Amos; daughters, Joni Pflumm and Amy (John) Ruo; grandchildren, Matt (Jessica) Pflumm, Megan (Aaron) Starek, Melissa (Jeremy) Meythaler, Parker (Stevie) Amos, Toni Ruo and Philip Ruo; 5 great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Russell, Frances (Jack) Kraft, and Loretta (Skip) Kimball; and sister-in-law, Paula Ramona Upton.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Brookdale Shawnee where they graciously cared for her for the past three years. Additionally, the family would like to thank Kansas City Hospice for caring for Margaret the past several months.
A visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at the Amos Family Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 3, 2015, also at the funeral home. Burial to follow in Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens.
