Margaret Mary Schmidt, 91, of Overland Park, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at the Kansas City Hospice House.
Margaret was born September 4, 1922 to the late Martin and Bertha Betzle in Prairie du Chein, Wisconsin. After completing high school, Margaret graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing with a degree in Registered Nursing. After completing her degree, she joined the United States Navy and earned the rank of Lieutenant. Margaret continued her nursing career for over 50 years. Margaret retired from full time nursing in 1987 from Overland Park Regional Hospital; she continued to stay active working part-time at the Indian Creek Nursing Home and private duty.
Margaret was a devoted wife and mother; she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Walter C. Schmidt in December of 2011. Margaret was an exceptional seamstress, and made most of her daughters' clothes, including their wedding dresses. She loved knitting and participating in craft shows in the Kansas City area. Margaret and Walter enjoyed their travels and especially Beaver Creek, Colorado.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Margie McGuire and husband Larry; Nancy Roos and husband Paul; three grandsons, Michael McGuire and wife Amy; David McGuire and Matthew Roos; great grandson, Thomas Walter McGuire; step brother, Mickey Schloegl; 3 step sisters, Frieda DuCharme, Marian Schloegl, and Donna (Schloegl) Geraghty; and her loving cat, Bernie. Margaret is also preceded in death by a sister, Frances Weinger; and three brothers, Marty, Bob, and Max.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church 16000 W. 143rd Street, Olathe, KS 66062. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
