Margaret A. Sweeney

Margaret "Marty" Sweeney (Goode), 89, cherished mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on April 10th, 2022.  She was born at home on December 26th, 1932 to Freda and Frank Goode in Shawnee, Kansas.  She always spoke fondly of her idyllic, happy childhood, and how much love her mother and father gave to their eleven children.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and attended St. Joseph Grade School.  She graduated from St. Joseph High School, where she was named prom queen and captain of the cheerleading squad.  She, along with her sister, Jeanette Goode, were both honored by being chosen to crown the blessed Mary during the May Crowning Ceremony.

Marty was a registered nurse, graduating from St. Mary's Nursing School in Kansas City.  During nursing school, she met and married Dr. James M. Sweeney.  They built a home in Earnshaw Estates where they started their family.  Marty worked for several years as a nurse at St. Mary's Hospital and for Dr. Paul Burger, while raising five children.  She always said that her greatest joy in life was raising her children, and everyone knew that is what made her the most happy.  She was very involved with her twelve grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.  She took great pride in taking care of them and had a heart of gold doing it.  We will always remember our mother for her loving warmth, sense of humor, kindness and selflessness.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Freda Frances Goode (Agnitsch), her father, Frank J. Goode, and her siblings, Frank C. Goode, Jeanette T. Goode, William J. Goode.  She is survived by her children, Michael S. Sweeney (Penny), Louisburg, KS, Mary E. Welton (Tom), Castle Rock, CO, James F. Sweeney (Ginny), Lenexa, KS, Therese A. Wickey (Tim), Leawood, KS, Margaret M. Scott (Chris), Los Angeles, CA.  She is also survived by her siblings, Mary J. (Goode) Donnici, Robert L. Goode (Delores), Frederick J. Goode, Donald E. Goode (Terri), Daniel E. Goode, Geraldine R. (Goode) Gadwood and James A. Goode.

Visitation on Wednesday, April 13th at Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS from 8:30 to 10:15 AM.  A rosary will be prayed at 8:30 AM.  Funeral Mass will be held the same day at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church at 11 AM, 3106 Flora Avenue, Kansas City, MO.  Burial services following Funeral Mass at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, 8300 Quivira Road, Lenexa, KS.
