Maria Elena (Lane, Lana) Slater, 77, of Leawood, Kansas passed away on July 2, 2024. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Bette and LeRoy Slater, whom are both now deceased. Lana is survived by her three younger siblings: Bob (Joan) Slater of Overland Park, KS, Sher (Brad) Peterson of The Villages, FL, and Rick (Julie) Slater of Lansing, KS. Also surviving are her two nieces: Tana Byers and Sara Egger and five nephews: Todd Peterson, Ryan Slater, Andy Slater, Jeff Slater, and Matt Slater; as well as a growing number of grand-nieces and nephews.
Lane had no children of her own but thanks to her siblings was able to know the love and enjoyment of being an aunt. In addition, Lane’s partner Mary Wier, now deceased, brought a large extended family into her life, providing her with many more wonderful family memories.
Maria was fortunate enough to have a career she loved for over 38 years with the Department of Defense. As a Leadership and Management Instructor, she was able to travel extensively throughout the world, both professionally and personally. Her last two assignments were as Director of the Management School in Munich, Germany, and as the Acting Director of the Civilian Leadership Training Division at the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 pm, Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
