Marjorie Jean Sams-Dillon
Marjorie received her new body and entered heaven Saturday, July 16, 2022.
Marjorie was born on February 22, 1942, in Goodland, KS to Gene and Alice Duell. She grew up on a family farm. After high school graduation she entered Bethany Nursing School. While attending nursing school she was introduced to her first love, Idus Sams. They married August 30th, 1961 raising two sons, Michael Sams and Richard Sams. They loved each other until his sudden death in 1985.
Marjorie was blessed to find her second love in Ronald Dillon. With this union came four stepchildren, Ralph, Rick, Nancy and Patti. Ron and Marjorie enjoyed many things together. They shared their love of Christ and were members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. They traveled the world, spent the winters in Arizona, loved playing cards and ballroom dancing until his death in 2018.
Marjorie devoted her life to her nursing career receiving her master’s degree from Wichita State University. Her career included many medical facilities throughout Kansas City including Bethany Hospital, Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Overland Park Medical Center, Research Medical Center just to name a few. She finished her career at Research Medical Center working in Administration. She joined the Army Reserves in 1981 as a Major and resigned her commission as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1991.
Marjorie had many interests. As a young girl she played the piano, and enjoyed playing at church, and playing the piano with her uncle that played the mandolin.
She loved to read her bible every morning! She was an avid reader of all the things and full of knowledge. She loved taking walks and going to the library. She was always heath conscious. However, if there was a BBQ contest anywhere in Kansas, you could find Marjorie judging. She enjoyed sewing and cross stitching, making a lot of her own clothes.
She belonged to the Rotary International, Sigma Theta Tau, American Association of University Women, Monticello United Methodist Women, Kansas State Nurses Association, and a Member of Kansas City BBQ Society. She was a board member at Main Street Credit Union. She volunteered for many committees at Holy Cross Lutheran Church and sang in the choir.
Preceding Marjorie in death were her parents Gene and Alice Duell; first husband, Idus Sams and second husband, Ron Dillon; brother’s Virgil Duell and Barton Duell; sister Dorothy Bartholomew; brother-in-law’s Joe Sams and Roy Chapman; sister-in-law’s Sue Duell, Ovy Huber, Eunice Carney; stepson Ralph Dillon; son-in-law Dave Woodin.
She is survived by her sons Michael Sams (Clara), Richard (Leah); stepchildren Eva Dillon, Rick Dillon (Beth), Nancy Woodin, Patti Griffiths (Jeff), 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Brothers and sisters; Clarence Duell, Marvin Bartholomew, Melody Fulton (Jim), and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Thursday, July 21st, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Amos Family Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 22nd, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church located at 7851 W. 119th St. Overland Park, KS 66213. Marjorie will be laid to rest at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens.
