Marlene Marie Soares

January 2, 1955 — September 2, 2021

Marlene Marie Soares, 66, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away on September 2 after a year-long struggle against lung cancer.

She is survived by husband Dr. Michael J. Soares; son Jared Soares (Katelyn Polantz), of Washington, DC; and in Hawaii: mother Basilia Bagoyo; brothers Felix Bagoyo Jr. (Corinne), Michael Bagoyo (Stephanie), Rodney Bagoyo; sisters Denise Banua (Dino), Francine Kekona; and eleven nieces and nephews. Her father Felix Bagoyo Sr. and niece Kaitlin Bagoyo precede her in death.

Born in Waipahu, Hawaii, Marlene spread Aloha spirit to everyone she met. She was a graduate of the University of Hawaii. She left Hawaii for the mainland in 1981, after spending a year in Australia, and continued to travel the world with her husband Michael. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in August. She retired from a nursing career at Overland Park Regional hospital in 2016, after three decades of caring for premature babies in their first days of life.

Her greatest joy came from raising her son Jared, who became a professional photographer, after Marlene had developed an eye for art and photography and kept cameras around the house.

Marlene also was an accomplished quilter and collected antique quilts and sewing equipment. She developed her own style of quilting and sewed numerous quilts over the years, most of which she gifted to family and friends.
