Martha V. Walden

Martha Virginia (Armstrong) Walden, of Shawnee, KS, died on Sept. 1, 2017 at Rose Estates. Martha was born on April 9, 1916, near Centralia, KS to Fred and Ethel Armstrong. She and J.D. Walden were married on December 21, 1947, at Sabetha, KS. Martha is survived by nieces/nephews and 2nd cousins. She attended Centralia Schools and graduated from Emporia State University with emphasis in elementary education. Martha began her teaching career at Armstrong School, a rural school near Centralia, built on land donated by her grandfather, Simon Armstrong. She also taught at Centralia, KS, Marysville, KS, and Sabetha, KS, before joining the Shawnee Mission School system in 1954. Martha taught first grade at Bonjour Elementary and at Shawanoe Elementary for a total of twenty-four years. She retired in 1978. Martha and her husband operated Walden Antiques, participating only in antique shows. She was a member of Johnson County Retired Teachers; Shawnee Historical Society; Shawnee Mission Historical Society; National Education Association (life member); Kansas National Education Association (life member). Martha joined the Shawnee United Methodist Church in 1955.

Visitation on Sunday at Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, KS 66203, from 2-3 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Centralia Community Church, 418 Main St, Centralia, KS 66415.  Burial at Centralia Cemetery.
