Marvin was born on December 4, 1945 and was one of 13 children. Marvin is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Margaret Cansler, and siblings Melvin, Brenda, James, Carl, Linda, Michael, and Roger. He is survived by siblings Glenna, Dennis, Patricia, Carol, and Jeffery along with his wife of 56 years Marylyn (Golba) Cansler, daughters Kellie (Jerry) Arndt of Sheridan, WY and Kimberly (Dean) Barber of Lenexa, KS, 7 grandchildren Lindsay (David) Gray, Logan (Kim) Brull, Nicolas, Cydney and Emily Barber, McKenna and Maggie Arndt, 1 great grandchild, Piper Gray.
Marvin was born in Turner, Kansas, where he attended Turner High School. He met Marylyn in the spring of 1966 at a dance and proudly served in the Vietnam war from 1966-1968. Marylyn and Marvin were married in January 1968 and built their life together in Shawnee, Kansas.
Marvin used his G.I. Bill to attend barber college and was a barber for over 50 years. He owned a very successful barber shop in Merriam, KS called Marv’s Barbershop. He never met a stranger and loved going to work every single day.
Marvin had a passion for horses, Ford trucks, Corvettes and traveling to Mexico every February with his wife. He had a great love for his family and his faith. He served as an usher at St. Joseph Catholic Church for many years.
In December 2020 during the Covid pandemic, Marvin survived a 30 day stay in ICU due to Covid complications. The family thanks Dr. Nial Castle for his recovery.
In September 2023 during his hospital stay for severe congestive heart failure at The University of Kansas Medical Center, Marvin was diagnosed with Primary Myelofibrosis, a blood cancer of the bone marrow, caused from his time in Vietnam from agent orange. With the help of Dr. Tarun Dalia he survived his stay in the hospital and returned home to be with his family in his final days.
He will be forever missed by his customers, friends and family.
Visitation will be from 5-8 pm, Monday, October 2, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The funeral mass will be at 10 am, Tuesday, October 3, 2023, also at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial to follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
