Mary M. Cashman Obituary

Mary M. Cashman, 98, died Tuesday evening February 1st at Kansas City Hospice in Kansas City, MO. Mary was born on January 1st ,1924, in Salem, NE, the oldest daughter of William G. Reschke and Sofia E. Santo Reschke. She married Samuel E. Cashman on August 3rd, 1951. Mary lived in Preston, NE, Fairview, KS, Ottawa, KS and finally Merriam, KS for the last 60 plus years.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter, three grandchildren, and two great grandchildren: Son William E. Cashman and his wife Roxanna of Shawnee, KS; Son Mark E. Cashman of Austin, TX; Daughter Elizabeth Ann Cashman of Burlington, VT; Granddaughter Amanda Cashman Kohn and her husband Michael and their two children Laurel and Gwyneth of Golden, CO; Grandson Robert W. Cashman of Lawrence, KS; and Grandson Harley T. Ludwig of Kansas City, MO. She is also survived by her sister Joan Jurgensmeier of Salina, KS, her brother Ralph Reschke of Lawrence, KS, her brother John’s wife Mary Ann Reschke of Valley Falls, KS, and a large extended family of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother Sophie Reschke (104), three brothers and spouses: William G. and Valerie J. Reschke of San Francisco, CA; Robert C. and Marcella M. Reschke of Hiawatha, KS; and John D. Reschke of Valley Falls, KS. Mary’s husband Samuel E. Cashman passed away on September 1st, 1998, and son David E. Cashman died December 2nd, 2014.

Services will be held on February 10th at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shawnee, KS, with visitation at 9:30 and funeral Mass at 10:30. Burial will take place at the National Cemetery in Leavenworth, KS at 2:30. Funeral arrangements are being provided by the Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS. Casket bearers are Robert W. Cashman of Lawrence, KS, Harley T. Ludwig of Kansas City, MO, Steve Jurgensmeier of Manhattan, KS, Edward R. Reschke of Spring Hill, KS, Ralph E. Reschke of Arvada, CO, and Terry M. Reschke of Hiawatha, KS.

Mary attended high school at Sacred Heart Academy in Falls City, NE. She then attended Peru State Teachers college in Peru, NE for one year and was granted a teaching certificate. Mary joined the Army Airforce in April 1945 attaining the rank of Sargent before being honorably discharged. In October 1946, she enrolled at Washburn College, but transferred to Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, CO at the request of Samuel E. Cashman. Mary earned her BA from Colorado State College of Education, her Master’s and Specialist degrees from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Mary taught in the Shawnee Mission School District until retirement. She also taught at St. Joseph Catholic School in the evening, and weekend catechism classes for over 50 years. Mary attended many reading conferences around the world: Beijing, China; Salamanca, Spain; and Melbourne, Australia. Other achievements include being a den mother in scouts, receiving the Kindest Kansas Citian award sponsored by KMBC, and serving as President of the Art Study Club at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Her proudest accomplishment was her induction into the Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame in Dodge City, KS in 2021.
